Frequently asked questions

What is the benefit of combining both hardware and software?
To identify and address the scale of the urban air pollution problem requires access to vast amounts of data; a volume and coverage not yielded by high-cost government monitoring stations. These measurement stations are few and far between and are not fine-grained enough to provide actionable insights, leading to inaction or overreaction (e.g. closing an entire city district to traffic). Hawa Dawa is able to take the data from these stations and combine it with other open data sets as well as with our own real-time sensor readings from representative locations across an area. Since our devices are calibrated with the official stations, they can provide an additional layer of field data, augmenting the official values and providing additional data points which helps us supplement and refine our own models.
Do your devices already have technical certification?

Yes - our sensor devices are CE-certified and are ready to be deployed into the field.

What pollutants do you test for?
We measure World Health Organisation (WHO) critical pollutants: Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10), Ozone (O3) and Environmental factors including temperature and relative humidity.
What are the first steps to take to measure air quality in my city?
Please reach out to one of our air quality experts by emailing or submitting your details through our contact form here. We would be very happy to arrange an initial telephone call to discuss your specific needs, questions and help identify the best possible approach to measuring air quality in your city.  It would be useful to know whether you have an official monitoring station in your city, the approximate size of your city and which pollutants you are most interested in measuring.
How extensively have you tested your devices?
When it comes to air quality measurements, data quality is critical. In order to reach sufficient equivalence for indicative measurements covering all seasons, we are running a critical proof of concept field test for 12 months in cooperation with Swiss Post and the city of Bern until early 2019. Initial results from the test show our environmental data demonstrates high correlation with the official measuring stations; a strong sign that Hawa Dawa’s IoT solution will fall under the category of indicative measurement, a type of measurement used to complement the small number of official state measurement stations that exist. We have also undertaken extensive testing with partners such as the Fraunhofer Research Institute, TU Munich & German & Swiss Environmental Protection Offices. This ensures that our affordable, CE certified devices provide the highest possible standard of data quality according to the EC Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC.

Are your measurements compatible with EU air quality measurement standards?
Both our point measurements and our models adhere to EC Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC. If you would like to know more about our accuracy, contact us as or submit a message using our contact form.
How can you integrate our existing data into your models and vice versa: how do I integrate your data into my smart city platform?

Hawa Dawa offers a straightforward API that enables easy access to its measured and modeled data, providing the basis you need to integrate environmental data into your smart city platform, taking it to a new level with multiple new applications.

How granular are the air quality results you can provide?

We provide direct data from our individual sensors as well as satellite-supported models with a 100 metre squared resolution

In which format will I receive your data?

Once we have your specific project requirements, we can go to the next step and answer all questions you have regarding data format, our models and our hardware. Please contact us or email

Where are your sensors already deployed in the field? Who are your main customers?

We already have our IoT sensors deployed and customers across Germany and Switzerland. Our projects are diverse and we work with engaged cities, corporates and project partners to deliver air quality data and mitigate for air pollution

What are your lead times like? When can we have sensors in the field and measuring?
Once we know your specific project requirements, we can provide an costed estimate which will include timescales and the various stages of production, set up and deployment. As soon as we know what you would like to measure and where, we can get started! Please contact us for a discussion of your needs.
We want to commission a new data product but don't know where to start - how can you help?
We are experts in working hand in hand with our partners to design and co-develop new data products based on our hi-resolution environmental data. Depending on your specific need, we can  help integrate our data into your existing smart city platforms and build your existing datasets into our models to produce entirely new insights for effective, tailored measures to combat air pollution. You can view some of the applications for our data here. Please contact us for more information using our online form or email
Can I buy your air quality data for my area?
As soon as we know your specific spatial and temporal requirements for air quality measurement, we can go to the next step and answer all questions you have regarding data format, our models and our hardware and share a costed proposal with yes, absolutely! Please contact us for more information using our online form or by emailing
